COLORNOPHOTOLIFE

Preview of Colornophotolife from Saturday 2 September to Sunday 8 October 2023

From 13 to 15 October the photographic festival returns to Colorno (Parma) that since its inception seeks to propose “roots and new frontiers” through its extensive program of exhibitions, events and workshop. The preview starts on September 2 with five exhibitions and appointments until November 26

Colorno (Parma), 3 August 2023 – The 14th edition of ColornoPhotoLife will return to Colorno (Parma) from 13 to 15 October 2023 and the proposed theme is “Confini” (Boundaries), interpreted in its multiple meanings. At the beginning of this millennium, what is the meaning of “boundaries”? What are the boundaries of photography? Questions that the festival, both with exhibitions and meetings, will try to answer.

During the three highlight days of October will alternate exhibition moments of photography, projection of audiovisual, editorial presentations, reading tables of its portfolio, workshop, music concerts and, for the second year, the reading prize fanzine Read-Zine.

The exhibitions are set up in the Aranciaia building (Vittorio Veneto square) both on the ground floor and on the first floor, in the MUPAC museum space. This year will revolve around the exhibition of the first true social reporter: Tina Modotti with “Beyond the borders” (from 13 October to 26 November 2023) curated by Ascanio Kurkumelis.

A hundred photographs, original prints with silver salts of the seventies, made from the negatives of the artist that comrade Vittorio Vidali gave to the photographer Riccardo Toffoletti, protagonist of his rediscovery. The inauguration will be held on Friday, October 13 at 9pm. A great photographer, one of the greatest female interpreters of the artistic avant-garde of the last century, who expressed her idea of freedom through civic commitment.

Even today, Tina Modotti remains the symbol of an emancipated and modern woman, whose art is inextricably linked to the search for a “new humanity”.

The exhibition of Colorno is realized thanks to the fundamental scientific contribution of the Committee Tina Modotti and tells, through the shots of silver salts but also the letters and documents, the events of an indomitable spirit, free and unconventional in Mexico in the twenties. In her life Tina transforms her way of photographing, in a few years she goes through a dazzling artistic experience: after the first attentions to nature where she looks for the aesthetics of the images (roses, calluses, bamboo canes, cacti) she moves the lens towards more dynamic forms, then uses the photographic medium as a tool of investigation and social denunciation becoming an author-activist. His works, realized with an aesthetic balance, frequently assume ideological value: exaltation of the symbols of work, of the people and their redemption (hands of workers, political and trade union demonstrations, sickle and hammer).

Highlight of the festival from 13 to 15 October

On Friday 13 October you will enter the three-day highlight of the festival. In addition to the monograph on Tina Modotti at 9pm will be inaugurated photographic exhibitions in the spaces of Aranciaia: “Geometries of nature” by Sandro Santioli, “The Way” by Luciano Bovina, “They have gone” by Lorenzo Vitali (space Open Air Aranciaia) and “The show of nature”, a collection of 15 years of the competition Oasis Photocontest. To follow – at 9.30pm – inauguration of photographic exhibitions at MUPAC: “Forbidden to die – Stories of ordinary resistance” by Renata Busettini and Max Ferrero, winners of the 19th edition of Portfolio Italia, “The giant from the feet of clay” by Francesca Artoni, winner of the Portfolio Maria Luigia 2022, “PH” by Michela Mariani, winner of the competition “Umane Tracce Awards”. The exhibitions of both spaces will remain visible until November 26.

From 10pm musical concert of the group “Bottega Musicale & Photographers” accompanied by images of the members of the group Color’s Light.

Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 at the MUPAC will take place portfolio readings (13th edition of the Maria Luigia Prize), the last stage of Portfolio Italia, along with the most important conferences. Saturday at 10:30am will be inaugurated the collateral exhibitions (fruit of the laboratories “DiCult” of the FIAF) exposed in the commercial premises and in other collective spaces of the Parma town, with guided tour, by the director of the Department of Culture Silvano Bicocchi. The event comes to the conclusion of the activity of the laboratories “DiCult” of the FIAF: part of the collective works will be exhibited at the festival in the Cinema Teatro in Via XX Settembre in the Sala Juventus and other commercial spaces of the town, as in the past years.

In the afternoon (2:30pm – 6pm) AV Lab – Photographic audiovisual workshop in the Sala Juventus of the Cinema Teatro of Colorno. At 3.30pm guided tour of the exhibition of Tina Modotti and Luciano Bovina with Silvano Bicocchi. From 6pm to 7pm at the space MUPAC talk with Silvano Bicocchi, Ascanio Kurkumelis and Antonella Monzoni entitled “The evolution of women’s photography, from Tina Modotti to our days”. At 9:45pm in Venaria presentation of the audiovisual winners at the circuit DIAF and GAER Competition.

Sunday 15 workshops (from 7am to 11am) in Sacca di Colorno with photographer Stefano Anzola and both in the morning and in the afternoon free photo shoots with Noblesse Oblige. Possibility to try Lumix equipment. From 3pm possibility of guided tours to the artistic heritage of Colorno. From 3pm to 6:15pm at the MUPAC, editorial presentations and finally at 6:30pm Portfolio “Maria Luigia” award ceremony.

SAINT MARGARET’S CATHEDRAL

SAINT MARGARET’S CATHEDRAL

The church was built between 1512 and 1525 in Gothic-international style and was consecrated on 27 May 1525, while the bell tower was raised in 1573.

The façade is rather intact, tied to the original design, while the interior was deeply modified with the construction of the side chapels added in 1834-36 designed by the architect Giuseppe Tebaldi who remodeled them to the neoclassical style.

The church was sacked in 1637 by Spanish troops and in 1734 by the Austrians and Francosardis.

In 1662 were whitewashed the paintings that adorned the walls.

In the counter-façade there is the marvelous painting of “Saint Remigio who baptized Clodoveo” by Clemente Ruta (1720). Next to the entrance, is the monument to Pier Luigi Belloni, executed in a purist style in 1840 by Tommaso Bandini, a pupil of the famous Lorenzo Bartolini, originally located in the local cemetery and then moved to the church in 1889.

Of noteworthy beauty, the pulpit with the coat of arms of the Dominicans executed on design of Antonio Brianti and coming from the Dominican church of Saint Peter Martyr in Parma (destroyed by Napoleon in 1813).

Artistically worthy the fourth chapel on the right, added between 1660 and 1666, with magnificent stuccoes by Domenico and Leonardo Reti depicting “Angels bearing symbols of the passion” and “The four evangelists”. In the center of the chapel is the altarpiece with the precious Last Supper painted by Giovanni Venanzi in 1668. Admirable in this chapel is the marble altar by Domenico Della Meschina, an artist who had already worked in the Ducal Chapel of San Liborio.

In the apse behind the main altar, there is an interesting altarpiece carved in 1575 in gilded wood with inside the masterpiece of Francesco Cairo representing “The Martyrdom of Saint Margaret” painted in 1637.

In the fifth chapel on the left, there is the painting “Our Lady with Child and Saints” painted in 1818 by the young Giovan Battista Borghesi, later official portraitist of Maria Luigia

The second chapel on the left, hosts the painting depicting “Saint Rocco discovered Piacenza” by Alessandro Bedoli Mazzola in 1568, on a design of his father Gerolamo Bedoli Mazzola, cousin of Parmigianino.

The rectory houses the painting “The massacre of the Innocents” painted at the beginning of 1700 by Pier Ilario Spolverini.

Curiosità

Colorno celebrate the passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi

On the morning of April 12, 1862 Giuseppe Garibaldi see foot in Colorno coming from Parma and headed to Casalmaggiore. He did not stay long, just for a quick stop to say hello to the town and then away to the land beyond the Po. The Municipality did not pay attention to expenses and built a triumphal arch at the entrance of the town, decorated the square, plentiful breakfast for nine people at the hotel Della Posta (six coachmen, one groom and two coaches), and a refreshment with sweets and “sciampagna”. To welcome the General there were the major Giovanni Maria Levacher, the council member Antonio Chevé and many other notables. The people welcomed him with great enthusiasm and a young woman, exited by his words of incitement to the fatherland, asked him if she could cut off a lock of his hair. She was certainly satisfied (it seems she was the daughter of the chemist Bocelli, who had fought with Garibaldi). It is not the only relic belonging to the General and present in the civic collection: there is the sabre donated to the General by the French government for the help given in the Prussian war, with the Vosges Campaign (1870-71), received in Colorno through his doctor, Timoteo Riboli (1808-1897).

Colorno will later demonstrate its admiration for Garibaldi by dedicating to him the main square of the town and a plaque that is still seen in the same square, dated June 2, 1900, and in memory of the death occurred in Caprera on June 2, 1882.

The Garibaldian of Colorno

The contribution of the inhabitants of Colorno had been effective: 35 of them had volunteered and actively participated in the war campaigns to liberate the South. The names are in the list drawn up by the Municipality after eh National Unit.

We want to rememebr them all: «Guzzoni Melchiorre, Braciforte comandante Lodovico, Battioni Leopoldo, Canali Demetrio, Monici Eugenio, Giacomo Valenti, Sporta Giuseppe, Pellegrini Cipriano, Pecchioni Francesco, Gerbella Demetrio, Bocchia Pietro, Zanardi Ernesto, Zanardi Dalmazio, Zanardi Giacomo, Zanardi Giovanni, Morenghi Giuseppe, Fano Mosè, Zoni Parisi Marianna, Garzia Angelo, Geminiani Luigi, Gatti Gaspare, Marchiani Narciso, Papini Adolfo, Piccinini Nicola, Montecchi Annibale, Mazzera Pietro, Piccoli Enrico, Sichel Rutilio, Amoretti Antonio, Avanzini Giglielmo, Geminiani Antonio, Angelini Luigi, Bonazzi Luigi, Negri Luigi, Caldarini Fabiano».

It was a contribution in human strength and in money, for the decision to join the initiative “of the undefeated Our General Garibaldi for the purchase of a million rifles for the defense of Italy”. On November 3, 1859 “willing and unanimous” the City Council had deliberated the contest of the Municipality “so striking patriotic proposal with the sum of five hundred lire”.

The history of Colorno in the portraits of Carlo Mattioli

In the hall of the City Council there are sixteen portraits of the famous painter Carlo Mattioli (born in Modena in 1911 and lived in Parma, where he died in 1944) of famous people who, as in the municipal archive, were commissioned in 1963 by Augusta Ghidiglia Quintavalle, superintendent of the National Gallery of Parma, characters “who had both by birth and political ties or culture related to the history of Colorno”, sovereigns, men of arms and church, artists and writers.

The investment by the Municipality was due to comply the Law 717 – 1949, called law “percent for art”, which, inspired by the Art. 9 of the Constitution (promotion of culture), obligates the public institutions at the time of the construction of a new building, to allocate to their landscaping a share not less than 2% of the value of the property, even with the purchase of works of art of painting or sculpture.

In 1964, the historic Longara was finally demolished and the construction of the new Town Hall was started, where today it is possible to admire the half- busts of Maria Luigia, Azzo da Correggio, Zaccaria Olivieri or the Bishop Martino da Colorno.

Antonio Ligabue e “Il leopardo”
